A garage gets messy fast because it’s doing too many jobs at once: storage, workshop, sports closet, and overflow pantry. Our team’s favorite DIY fixes focus on three things—getting items off the floor, making tools easy to grab, and keeping “drop zones” contained—without turning your garage into a major remodel.

Pick 4–6 zones (tools, lawn/garden, auto, seasonal, sports, recycling) and mark rough “parking spots” on the floor with painter’s tape. Add big, readable bin labels so everything returns to the same zone.
Pegboard is a fast way to turn wall space into storage. Leave a small gap behind the board (furring strips) so hooks seat properly, then outline tools with a marker so you can reset the wall in seconds.
A French cleat rail lets you hang and rearrange tool holders, small shelves, or a drill station as your needs change. Secure the cleat into studs and keep heavy items at chest height, not overhead.
Use wall-mounted brackets or freestanding shelves for predictable categories (holiday décor, camping, paint). Clear bins reduce “mystery box” clutter, and identical sizes stack safer and look calmer.
Overhead racks or simple joist-mounted hooks work well for totes, folding chairs, and seasonal items. Keep weight limits conservative and store only items that won’t be dangerous if bumped.
Screw-top jars under a shelf, magnetic strips for bits and drivers, and shallow trays for fasteners stop the “pile of hardware” problem. Label lids and keep a dedicated container for oddball screws so they don’t migrate.
Set a 10-minute weekly reset to return items to their zones and empty the “misc” bin before it overflows. When something new comes in, decide its home immediately so clutter doesn’t re-form.
